Batticalo

In Eastern Province Srilanka, Batticaloa is one of the most famous and important city. Batticaloa is famous for its serene beaches, flat year round shallow water lagoons. Batticaloa is one of the most friendly tourist spot in the world, with spectacular beach locations and delicious food. Mouth-watering local cuisines can be enjoyed at the restaurants near the beach. The price for accommodation is quite cheap.


Located few kilometres far from Batticaloa, Pasikuda is haven for all resort lovers. Running across as the longest stretches of shallow coastline, people can walk along with no probable harm as the water is just few inches deep. It is one of the most promising relaxation destination for locals as well as foreigner alike. For nautical adventure lovers, nearby beach of Nilaweli provides opportunity of scuba diving and surfing.

Batticaloa is also culturally rich, there are several temples of Portuguese Burgher culture, which can catch fancy of history enthusiasts.

Batticaloa is famous for its lagoons. One of the famous and largest one is Batticaloa lagoon that extends over 56 km. There are several islands adjoining these lagoons that fascinate tourists, like Buffaloa Island, Bone Island etc. One of the most fascinating architectural sopt is manning bridge, which is the largest bridge in the city and connects Kallady to the other southern part of the districts.


One of the most famous temple of this city is Mamangam temple. It is a Hindu religious temple, and one of the oldest in the country. Every ten years the temple hosts a festival that attracts many religious Hindus from different parts.

The town can also be admired for its historical importance. Apparently, Dutch arrived through Batticaloa after they made a deal with Sinhalese king, and chased away thevPortuguese in 17th century.


The closest beach to Batticaloa is Kallady beach, which is extremely beautiful and very popular with the locals. You can also see fishermen right on their working site, which provides a very rare chance of excellent holiday pictures. Famous among Srilankans is Singing fish Restaurant near the Batticaloa Dutch fort. It is popular for its exquisite wines and traditional cuisines.

Batticaloa is an interesting town, with lots of shopping attractions, and statues of mermaid (Which is mascot of the city.)
